MIRROR SERIES

In this project, I use mirrors to investigate how reflection can be used to change space.  I aim to distort existing shapes within the frame of the photograph, as well as create illusions that makes the viewer think twice about the subject of the photograph and how they were made.

After focusing on light for my last project, I made Mirror Series to investigate reflection as a way to alter and abstract space. The use of mirrors also allowed me to perform a material study through which I explored a reflective material that could potentially be applied to my work in architecture.

Mirror Series relates to my work in architecture in terms of materiality and its contribution to design rather than an application.  Reflection is a concept that is often present in architecture, from glass to water to mirrors.  One example of reflected glass is  Zaha Hadid’s Opus Hotel, which uses glass to reflect the surrounding buildings of Dubai in order to create a continuous skyline that changes with the abstract form of the building.  In his Museum Langen Foundation, Tadao Ando uses reflections in both the glass skin and pond surround the building to change the structure by giving it the impression of transparency and lightness.  PPAG architects use mirrors for the façade of a restaurant to change the space by blending  the structure into the surrounding nature.  My project has allowed me to learn about reflection and its relation to space, and I can use this as an aspect of design when conceptualizing structures and buildings.
